President's welcome message

Welcome to the website of the Hong Kong Statistical Society.

The Society was founded in 1977 by the late Professor and renowned scholar John Aitchison of the University of Hong Kong. Our members include academics, government statisticians and a growing number of data scientists and quantitative analysts working in the private sector. Our mission is to

• Provide formal recognition and promote professional development through accreditation of qualifications and training experience
• Organise and sponsor statistical conferences, workshops and seminars delivered by renowned statisticians
• Improve statistical literacy and promote the importance of statistics in society. This is achieved partly through the Statistical Project Competition for secondary students, an annual event organised by the Society since 1986.

Statistics is the science of learning from data. It has become an increasingly vital discipline in today's data-driven world, playing a pivotal role in shaping our societies, influencing decision-making processes, and driving innovation across various domains. In this era of rapid technological advancements and unprecedented access to data, the importance of statistics has never been more evident. From finance to healthcare, from social sciences to artificial intelligence, statistics provides us with the tools and methodologies to extract meaningful insights from vast amounts of information, enabling us to make informed decisions and drive evidence-based actions.

These gatherings provide an excellent platform for networking, knowledge exchange, and collaboration with professionals who share a passion for statistics.
