Description

The Hong Kong Statistical Society (HKSS) held a public seminar “Better Data for Better Lives”, along with the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), the Education Bureau, on 20 October 2015 at the Hong Kong Science Museum as part of Hong Kong's cerebrations of the second World Statistics Day. The objective of the seminar was to showcase the importance of high quality official statistics to making of better decisions and improving the lives of people.

The speakers included Prof CHAN Ngai Hang, Choh-Ming Li Chair Professor of Statistics of Chinese University of Hong Kong; Ms Reddy Ng, Principal Economist of Economic Analysis and Business Facilitation Unit of Financial Secretary’s Office; and Ms Marion Chan, Assistant Commissioner of C&SD. The topics of their presentations were “Statistical Finance: Everything you want to know but are afraid to ask”, “Changing Trends of Hong Kong’s Population and the Demographic Challenges Ahead” and “Better Data – Better Policies” respectively.

 

In the public seminar, President of the HKSS, Prof Ng Kai Wang welcomed guests and audience.

 

Joining Prof KW Ng (second right) at the public lecture were Commissioner for Census and Statistics, Mr Leslie Tang (first right); Deputy Secretary for Education, Dr Catherine Chan (third left); Prof Chan Ngai Hang (third right); Ms Reddy Ng (second left); and Ms Marion Chan (first left).

 

Representing the HKSS, Prof NH Chan gave a very impressive presentation on the interesting topic of “Statistical Finance: Everything you want to know but are afraid to ask”.

 

Some 300 participants attended the public seminar, including academic staff and students from tertiary institutions, statistical practitioners, teachers and students from secondary schools. Participants at the public seminar appreciated that the ultimate goal of producing high quality official statistics was to improve the lives of people.

 

The three seminar speakers answered questions from the audience.

 

The PowerPoint slides and the videos of the public lecture have been placed onto the Cyber Learning Centre (CLC) Plus, which is an internal learning portal built specially for government use. The materials at CLC Plus would serve as e-learning resources for government officials. Besides, the PowerPoint slides have also been placed onto the website of C&SD (http://www.censtatd.gov.hk/pastprojects/wsd2015/public_lecture/index.jsp).
