The Hong Kong Statistical Society and the Education Bureau had jointly organized a seminar on "Applications of Probability and Statistics" on 21 November 2009 (Saturday) delivered by Professor M.K. Siu (Department of Mathematics, The University of Hong Kong) and Professor K. Lam (Department of Finance and Decision Sciences, Hong Kong Baptist University). The Seminar attracted about 200 participants including secondary school teachers and members of Hong Kong Statistical Society.

At the Seminar, Professor Siu introduced many interesting probability examples found in our daily life and explained that probability is not merely the science of common sense but more importantly it makes sense while Professor Lam introduced the application of statistics in investment, particularly the use of mean, variance and covariance in selecting an optimal investment portfolio, and highlighted the relationship between the normal distribution and the black swan effect in financial crisis.
