President's welcome message
Welcome to the website of the Hong Kong Statistical Society.
The Society was founded in 1977 by the late Professor and renowned scholar John Aitchison of the University of Hong Kong. Our members include academics, government statisticians and a growing number of data scientists and quantitative analysts working in the private sector. Our mission is to
- Provide formal recognition and promote professional development through accreditation of qualifications and training experience
- Organise and sponsor statistical conferences, workshops and seminars delivered by renowned statisticians
- Improve statistical literacy and promote the importance of statistics in society. This is achieved partly through the Statistical Project Competition for secondary students, an annual event organised by the Society since 1986.
Statistics is the science of learning from data. It plays a vital role and is a crucial process behind how we make discoveries based on facts, and helps decision makers deal with future uncertainties with more confidence. There is a growing recognition of the importance of statistics as the world today produces more data than ever before, and collecting and finding insights from data has become an integral part of business.
I hope you will find our website informative and useful. As always, we welcome comments and suggestions for ways to improve the quality of our services.
Professor Alan WAN
President of the Hong Kong Statistical Society
