bulletTo commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Society and to promote the proper use of sample survey results amongst the general public, the Society co-organised a public seminar on ¡§Sample Surveys- How to be a Smart Data User¡¨ on 20 November 2007. The seminar was jointly organized with the Census and Statistics Department and the Education Development Bureau of the Hong Kong Government. This was also one of the seminars to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Census and Statistics Department. The moderator of the seminar was Mr. Leslie Tang, President of the Society; while speakers included Professor Chan Ying Keung of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Mr. KC Leung, Assistant Commissioner for Census and Statistics.

bulletCloser Relationship with Statistics and Census Service of Macao
A delegation of some 20 members, led by Mr. Leslie Tang, President of the Hong Kong Statistical Society, visited Statistics and Census Service of Macao (¿Dªù‰s­pº[´¶¬d§½) during the weekend of 20 and 21 October 2007. The purpose of the visit was to establish closer relationship between statistical professionals of Hong Kong and Macao. The visit program included some sports activities such as tennis, badminton and table tennis with colleagues of Statistics and Census Service of Macao, a commemorative dinner to celebrate the Macao¡¦s Official Statistics Day, and a tour to some spectacular tourist sites of Macao. All participants found the visit meaningful and enjoyable.

bulletThe Public Lecture by Professor Granger, the Nobel Laureate in Economics in 2003, was held on 16 May 2007 as one of the activities to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Hong Kong Statistical Society. The event was jointly organized with the Department of Applied Mathematics and the School of Accounting and Finance of the Polytechnic University of Hong Kong.


The public lecture on "Evaluation of Global Economic Models" delivered by Professor Granger was one of the activities to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Society.

bulletThe 2006/07 Statistical Project Competition was successfully completed. In this round of the Competition, some 222 projects were received from 989 students of 65 secondary schools. The Prize Presentation Ceremony was held on 28 April 2007.

bulletThe Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on 22 March 2007. At the AGM, the new Executive Council was successfully elected. After the AGM, a dinner was organized for members. Prof. Howell Tong, who recently received the Guy Medal in Silver 2007 awarded by the Royal Statistical Society, and Mr. HUANG Lang-hui, Director-General and Senior Statistician of the National Bureau of Statistics, joined us for dinner and shared with us their experiences and knowledge in a light-hearted environment.

Mr. Leslie Tang, the incoming President for the 2007/08 Executive Council, introduced the activity plan of the Society during the Annual General Meeting.
 
bulletTo commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Society, a Workshop on "Statistics in Finance and Economics" was held on 10 February 2007. The event was jointly organized with the Hong Kong Institute of Monetary Research. The speakers included Mr. HW Fung, Commissioner for Census and Statistics; Professor Lam Kin of Hong Kong Baptist University; Miss Kathryn Zhao of Deutsche Bank and Dr. Philip Yu of Hong Kong University.

Mr. HW Fung, Commissioner for Census and Statistics, delivered a talk on "Developments in Economic and Financial Statistics of Hong Kong".

Prof. Lam Kin of Hong Kong Baptist University delivered a talk on "How Bayesian inference may induce excess volatility, underreaction and overreaction in financial markets".

Miss Kathryn Zhao of Deutsche Bank delivered a talk on "Significance of Volume in Achieving VWAP".

Dr. Philip Yu delivered a talk on "On Some Models for Value at Risk".
 
bulletAs one of the events of the 30th Anniversary, the Society organized a 2-day Workshop on "Econometric Time Series" on 15-16 January 2007. The event was jointly organized with the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science of Hong Kong University and the Department of Econometrics and Operational Research of Free University of Amsterdam.
