Notes for applicants for CStat and GradStat 

The following is a summary of the criteria to be used for awarding the qualifications. It is provided to assist you in deciding whether or not to apply.

  1. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE FOR CERTIFIED STATISTICIAN. At least one of the following four criteria must be met.
    1. A good University Honours Degree and/or an appropriate Higher Degree in Statistics or in a subject containing a substantial coverage of statistical theory, method and practice in Hong Kong. It will be necessary to know what modules/special subjects have been taken. 

      Plus five years practical experience in applying statistics. (Some university courses, particularly at postgraduate level, may be eligible to count towards this practical experience.) 

    2. An appropriate Overseas Degree (in some cases a Master Degree will be the appropriate level) in Statistics or in a subject with a substantial coverage of statistical theory, method and practice. It will be necessary to know what modules/special subjects have been taken. 

      Plus five years practical experience in applying statistics. (Some university courses, particularly at postgraduate level, may be eligible to count towards this practical experience.)In both the preceding cases, the applicant's qualification(s) will be assessed as being appropriate by the Professional Affairs Committee. Comparability with the breadth and depth of coverage of the Society's Graduate Diploma will be required. Some university courses are formally accredited; other cases will be considered on an individual basis.

    3. The Graduate Diploma of the Hong Kong Statistical Society.

      Plus four years practical experience in applying statistics.

      In all three preceding cases, the applicant should have taken responsibility for the statistical content of the work during at least three of the years of experience.

    4. At least ten years practical experience in applying statistics at a responsible level together with acceptable evidence of knowledge, competence and contributions to the subject and its applications. Candidates who wish or expect to be considered under this criterion should also provide details of their publications and other significant contributions to statistics. Candidates must have knowledge and experience of a range of statistical methods, and not just be expert in one area of application; candidates will be expected to have publications or to have provided consultancy in a range of statistical areas.

  2. PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE FOR CERTIFIED STATISTICIAN. The Professional Affairs Committee will consider any relevant practical experience. The following list is indicative of the types of experience which would be considered but it is not comprehensive.
    bulletManaging a statistics section.
    bulletLeading projects with a substantial amount of statistical analysis or modelling.
    bulletUndertaking statistical analysis of data and reporting on the results.
    bulletHaving responsibility for the interpretation and presentation of statistical information.
    bulletDesigning statistical databases and reporting systems.
    bulletTeaching statistical theory and methods, and their applications, in a practically oriented way; the teaching must normally be at or above a level equivalent to an Honours Degree in Statistics or the HKSS Graduate Diploma.
    bulletUnsupervised statistical consultancy.
    bulletGenerally recognised as having made a substantial contribution to the subject of statistics

  3. RECOMMENDATION/REFEREEING FOR CERTIFIED STATISTICIAN. Two referees are normally required. If possible, both should be statisticians and one should be in a position of seniority. Both referees must be in a position to comment on the candidate's work from first hand knowledge. Further evidence of suitability may be required in certain cases.

  4. QUALIFICATIONS FOR GRADUATE STATISTICIAN. The qualification Graduate Statistician is awarded to those who have satisfied the academic requirements for Certified Statistician status but do not yet have the necessary practical experience. At least one of the following three criteria must be met: 

    1. A good University Degree and/or an appropriate Higher Degree in Statistics or in a subject containing a substantial coverage of statistical theory, method and practice in Hong Kong. It will be necessary to know what modules/special subjects have been taken.

    2. An appropriate Overseas Degree (in some cases a Master Degree will be the appropriate level) in Statistics or in a subject with a substantial coverage of statistical theory, method and practice. It will be necessary to know what modules/special subjects have been taken.

      In both the preceding cases, the applicant's qualification(s) will be assessed as being appropriate by the Professional Affairs Committee.
