  • HKSS dinner with the delegation of International Statistical Institute (ISI)
    Mr. Jef Teugels (ISI President), Mr. Jae C Lee (ISI President-elect), Ms. Ada van Krimpen (ISI Director) and Ms. Shabani Mehta (Assistant to ISI Director) of ISI visited Hong Kong in end April 2010 to discuss the preparation of the 59th World Statistics Congress (WSC) to be held in Hong Kong in 2013. The Society had the honour to invite these guests to a dinner on 30 April 2010. At the dinner, the ISI delegation and members of the Society shared their views on the organisation of the 59th WSC and other common concerns in the global statistics community.

  • The HKSS Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2010
    The Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on 30 March 2010 at the Immigration Tower. Some 50 members had attended.

    Some 50 members had attended the AGM.

    At the AGM, a souvenir was presented to Professor Lam Kin in appreciation of his generous donation to the Hong Kong Statistical Society for promoting statistical literacy.

    Professor Lam Kin received a souvenir from the President of the Society.

    HKSS also extended our warmest congratulations to Professor Tony W. K. Fung during the AGM. Professor Fung¡¦s project titled ¡§Outlier Diagnostics and Robust Estimation in Multivariate Statistical Analysis¡¨ won him the Natural Science Award (Second Class) of the Higher Education Institution Scientific Research Outstanding Achievement Award 2009.

    Professor Tony FUNG, who received the honor of the Natural Science Award (Second Class), took a picture with the President of the Society.

    After the AGM, a dinner was organized for members and all participants spent an enjoyable evening.

    A number of HKSS members attended the dinner after the AGM. They all spent a pleasurable evening.

  • Prize Presentation Ceremony of Creative Statistics Writing Competition
    To raise the interest of secondary school students in statistics and its application, the Hong Kong Statistical Society and Education Bureau organised the Statistics Creative-writing Competition for Secondary School Students for the first time in 2009.

    The Competition attracted about 100 submissions. The submissions covered a wide variety of themes, expressing in words the daily application of statistical concepts or putting statistical concepts into a story in a scientific and objective manner. An adjudication panel, which was led by Dr K.C. CHEUNG and comprised colleagues from mathematical education section of Education Bureau, statistics lecturers from universities and professional statisticians, was set up for the Competition. Having undergone stringent scrutiny by the adjudicators, 9 outstanding entries were selected for receiving the awards finally.

    A Prize Presentation Ceremony was held on 12 December 2009. We were honoured to have Mr. H.W. FUNG, JP, Commissioner for Census and Statistics, Dr. K.W. CHEUNG, Principal Assistant Secretary, Education Bureau, and Professor W.K. LI, the University of Hong Kong as officiating guests of the Ceremony. The teams winning the first four prizes were also invited to give presentations on their creative writings/stories and share with the audiences their valuable experience and gains in the course of preparing the submissions. The awarded entries would later be printed in the publication issued by the organisers.

  • Seminar on ¡§Applications of Probability and Statistics¡¨ on 21 November 2009
    The Hong Kong Statistical Society and the Education Bureau had jointly organized a seminar on "Applications of Probability and Statistics" on 21 November 2009 (Saturday) delivered by Professor M.K. Siu (Department of Mathematics, The University of Hong Kong) and Professor K. Lam (Department of Finance and Decision Sciences, Hong Kong Baptist University). The Seminar attracted about 200 participants including secondary school teachers and members of Hong Kong Statistical Society.
    At the Seminar, Professor Siu introduced many interesting probability examples found in our daily life and explained that probability is not merely the science of common sense but more importantly it makes sense while Professor Lam introduced the application of statistics in investment, particularly the use of mean, variance and covariance in selecting an optimal investment portfolio, and highlighted the relationship between the normal distribution and the black swan effect in financial crisis.

    Professor M.K. Siu mentioned the quest on how to toss a coin ten times and got all heads!

    Professor K. Lam shared with audience the smart way of investment with the use of statistics.

  • HKSS Examination Seminar cum Certificate Presentation Ceremony
    "The Hong Kong Statistical Society (HKSS) examination is a recommendable avenue for obtaining qualifications at various levels of the statistical profession," said Mr. FUNG Hing-Wang, Chairman of the Examination Board of HKSS.  In the HKSS Examination Seminar cum Certificate Presentation Ceremony, Mr. Fung shared with the audience the importance of acquiring qualifications of the statistical profession.

    Mr. Fung said,"As Hong Kong develops into a knowledge-based society, statistics has become the essential tool for daily operation and decision making in both business and public sectors.  There is increasing demand for qualified statistical professionals in all fields, including in particular finance, risk management, actuary, market research, quality management, etc.  Obtaining statistical profession qualifications will greatly enhance one’s competitive edge."

    Hong Kong Statistical Society first launched the statistical professional examination in 2002.  Up till now, over 400 candidates have sat the examination, and 130 of them have obtained qualifications at various levels of the statistical profession.  Many of them now work as statistical professionals in various fields.

    In the 2009 round of the examination, the following candidates have successfully passed examinations at different levels.  Their achievements are listed below (in alphabetical order of surnames):-

  • Briefing Seminar on the Statistics Creative-writing Competition 2009
    The Hong Kong Statistical Society and the Education Bureau were co-organising a new competition, namely "Statistics Creative-writing Competition 2009". The competition aims to raise the interest of secondary school students in statistics and its application; and to encourage them to creatively express in words the daily application of statistical concepts or put statistical concepts into a story in a scientific and objective manner.

    To enable participants to better understand the details of the competition, a briefing seminar was conducted on 16 May 2009. The responses were very favourable. Most of the teachers and students attending the seminar expressed interest in submitting entries for the competition. The deadline of submission would be 18 September 2009.

  • The HKSS Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2009
    The Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on 31 March 2009 at the Immigration Tower. Some 60 members had attended.

    At the AGM, two outstanding Chair Professors, Professor LI Wai Keung, Chair Professor of the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Hong Kong and Professor CHAN Ngai Hang, Professor of Statistics and Chairman of Department of Statistics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, were conferred on
    the Honorary Membership for their significant contributions and excellence in statistical work.

    Besides, six members were granted the "Hong Kong Statistical Society Service Award" in recognition of their sustained and/or significant support to the running of HKSS and its activities.

    After the AGM, a dinner was organized for members and participants had spent an enjoyable evening.

  • Talk delivered by Professor Paul Cheung on 27 March 2009
    The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science (DSAS) of the University of Hong Kong and HKSS had jointly organized a seminar on "Population Planning in a Low Fertility, High Migration and Rapidly Ageing Demographic Regime : Approaches and the Role of Statistics" on 27 March 2009 (Friday) delivered by the Director of United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), Professor Paul Cheung. The Seminar attracted about 150 participants from various sectors of the community, in particular the academia, professional statisticians from both public and private sectors.

    At the Seminar, Professor Cheung explored the intricacies of population planning in Singapore and their relevance to other Asian countries and regions. Apart from discussing the drivers of Singapore's population trends and their impact on the Singapore society, Professor Cheung also talked about population policy options in a multi-ethnic city state and the role of statistics in supporting population planning.

    Many professors and statistical practitioners attended the seminar and they raised some stimulating questions during the question and answer session.

  • A Gateway to Statistical Profession
    To enable interested parties understand more about the examination of Hong Kong Statistical Society and the career prospects, a briefing seminar was conducted jointly with the Centre for International Degree Programmes of the School of Professional and Continuing Education of the University of Hong Kong on 9 December 2008. Around 80 interested parties attended the talk.

  • Briefing seminar on Examination cum Certificate Presentation Ceremony
    To enable interested parties understand more about the 2009 round of the examination, one briefing seminar was conducted on 23 October 2008. More than 50 examination associates / members of the Society and students from tertiary institutions attended the seminars. Most of the participants found the seminars informative and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn the experience from successful candidates.

  • To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Society and to promote the proper use of sample survey results amongst the general public, the Society co-organised a public seminar on ¡§Sample Surveys- How to be a Smart Data User¡¨ on 20 November 2007. The seminar was jointly organized with the Census and Statistics Department and the Education Development Bureau of the Hong Kong Government. This was also one of the seminars to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Census and Statistics Department. The moderator of the seminar was Mr. Leslie Tang, President of the Society; while speakers included Professor Chan Ying Keung of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Mr. KC Leung, Assistant Commissioner for Census and Statistics.

  • Closer Relationship with Statistics and Census Service of Macao
    A delegation of some 20 members, led by Mr. Leslie Tang, President of the Hong Kong Statistical Society, visited Statistics and Census Service of Macao (¿Dªù‰s­pº[´¶¬d§½) during the weekend of 20 and 21 October 2007. The purpose of the visit was to establish closer relationship between statistical professionals of Hong Kong and Macao. The visit program included some sports activities such as tennis, badminton and table tennis with colleagues of Statistics and Census Service of Macao, a commemorative dinner to celebrate the Macao¡¦s Official Statistics Day, and a tour to some spectacular tourist sites of Macao. All participants found the visit meaningful and enjoyable.

  • The Public Lecture by Professor Granger, the Nobel Laureate in Economics in 2003, was held on 16 May 2007 as one of the activities to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Hong Kong Statistical Society. The event was jointly organized with the Department of Applied Mathematics and the School of Accounting and Finance of the Polytechnic University of Hong Kong.


The public lecture on "Evaluation of Global Economic Models" delivered by Professor Granger was one of the activities to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Society.

  • The 2006/07 Statistical Project Competition was successfully completed. In this round of the Competition, some 222 projects were received from 989 students of 65 secondary schools. The Prize Presentation Ceremony was held on 28 April 2007.

  • The Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on 22 March 2007. At the AGM, the new Executive Council was successfully elected. After the AGM, a dinner was organized for members. Prof. Howell Tong, who recently received the Guy Medal in Silver 2007 awarded by the Royal Statistical Society, and Mr. HUANG Lang-hui, Director-General and Senior Statistician of the National Bureau of Statistics, joined us for dinner and shared with us their experiences and knowledge in a light-hearted environment.

Mr. Leslie Tang, the incoming President for the 2007/08 Executive Council, introduced the activity plan of the Society during the Annual General Meeting.
 
  • To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Society, a Workshop on "Statistics in Finance and Economics" was held on 10 February 2007. The event was jointly organized with the Hong Kong Institute of Monetary Research. The speakers included Mr. HW Fung, Commissioner for Census and Statistics; Professor Lam Kin of Hong Kong Baptist University; Miss Kathryn Zhao of Deutsche Bank and Dr. Philip Yu of Hong Kong University.

Mr. HW Fung, Commissioner for Census and Statistics, delivered a talk on "Developments in Economic and Financial Statistics of Hong Kong".

Prof. Lam Kin of Hong Kong Baptist University delivered a talk on "How Bayesian inference may induce excess volatility, underreaction and overreaction in financial markets".

Miss Kathryn Zhao of Deutsche Bank delivered a talk on "Significance of Volume in Achieving VWAP".

Dr. Philip Yu delivered a talk on "On Some Models for Value at Risk".
 
  • As one of the events of the 30th Anniversary, the Society organized a 2-day Workshop on "Econometric Time Series" on 15-16 January 2007. The event was jointly organized with the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science of Hong Kong University and the Department of Econometrics and Operational Research of Free University of Amsterdam.
