First
World Statistics Day Seminar cum Commemorative Dinner held on
20.10.2010 Mr.
Leslie TANG, the President of the Society, delivered the opening
speech at the First World Statistics Day Seminar organized by the
Society (click here for
the contents of speech).
Professor NG Kai
Wang, the Head of Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at
the University of Hong Kong, reported his completion on “An
Unexpected Journey to the Converse of Bayes Theorem” (click
here for the synopsis and
presentation slides) in the seminar . After the seminar, Mr.
TANG presented the souvenir to Professor NG.
Mrs. Lily OU-YANG, Acting Commissioner for Census and Statistics,
delivered an opening speech at the commemorative dinner, jointly
organised by the Society and the Census and Statistics Department
(click here for the
contents of speech).
During the dinner, Professor GU Ming-gao, the Graduate Division Head
in the Department of Statistics, the Chinese University of Hong
Kong, and Professor LAM Kin, Professor Emeritus of Hong Kong Baptist
University, shared with members on the application of statistics.
Over 100 statistical professionals and academics attended the
commemorative dinner.

of Statistics”
「擴闊通識思維 『識』破統計謬誤」公開講座
The Census and Statistics Department
(C&SD) held a public seminar “Widening the Scope of General
Knowledge Recognising the Fallacies of Statistics”, along with the
Hong Kong Statistical Society, the Education Bureau and the Hong
Kong University Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, on
20 October 2010 at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University as part of
Hong Kong's cerebrations of the first World Statistics Day. The
objective of the seminar is to enhance the understandings of the
participants on interpretation and application of statistical data.
政府統計處在二零一零年十月二十日與香港統計學會、教育局和香港大學統計及精算學系,於香港理工大學舉行「擴闊通識思維
『識』破統計謬誤」公開講座,作為香港慶祝首個世界統計日的活動之一。講座的目的是加深參加者對正確理解和運用統計數據的認識。

Some 200 participants attended the
public seminar, including 150 secondary school teachers
and tertiary students, and 50 academic staff from
tertiary institutions and statistical practitioners.
約200名人士參加公開講座,包括150名中學老師和大專學生,以及50名大專院校的教職員和統計工作者。

HKSS dinner with the
delegation of International Statistical Institute (ISI)
Mr. Jef Teugels (ISI
President), Mr. Jae C Lee (ISI President-elect), Ms. Ada van Krimpen
(ISI Director) and Ms. Shabani Mehta (Assistant to ISI Director) of
ISI visited Hong Kong in end April 2010 to discuss the preparation
of the 59th World Statistics Congress (WSC) to be held in Hong Kong
in 2013. The Society had the honour to invite these guests to a
dinner on 30 April 2010. At the dinner, the ISI delegation and
members of the Society shared their views on the organisation of the
59th WSC and other common concerns in the global statistics
community.

The HKSS Annual General
Meeting (AGM) 2010
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) was
held on 30 March 2010 at the Immigration Tower. Some 50 members had
attended.

At the AGM, a souvenir was presented to Professor Lam Kin in
appreciation of his generous donation to the Hong Kong Statistical
Society for promoting statistical literacy.

HKSS also extended our warmest congratulations to Professor Tony W.
K. Fung during the AGM. Professor Fung’s project titled “Outlier
Diagnostics and Robust Estimation in Multivariate Statistical
Analysis” won him the Natural Science Award (Second Class) of the
Higher Education Institution Scientific Research Outstanding
Achievement Award 2009.
